Godan (5th Dan): A Public Declaration of Martial Responsibility
OFFICIAL PUBLIC NOTICE
MOUKO KAI KARATE AUSTRALIA — MOUKOKAIKAN
FORMAL APPLICATION FOR PROMOTION TO GODAN (5TH DEGREE BLACK BELT)
After more than three decades on the martial path, beginning in 1992 at eighteen years of age, I am formally submitting my application for promotion to Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) within MOUKO KAI KARATE AUSTRALIA.
Although my martial journey began in 1992, I want to acknowledge that these 34 years have not represented an uninterrupted period of training.
There have been breaks along the way, as life, personal responsibilities and changing circumstances demanded my attention.
As Founder and Chief Instructor, I recognise that this application carries particular responsibility, especially given that I established the organisation through which my promotion is being considered.
For that reason, I have chosen to make both my application and the process surrounding it public.
MY MARTIAL JOURNEY & LINEAGE
My martial journey has never been confined to physical training, technical proficiency or the pursuit of rank.
It has been a lifelong commitment to discipline, courage, responsibility, leadership, service and self-mastery.
Throughout this journey, I have remained deeply conscious of the teachings and influence of Hanshi Howard Lipman.
His insistence upon attention to detail, deeper understanding, uncompromising standards and the development of mind, body and spirit has remained fundamental to my approach to martial practice and instruction.
I carry those teachings with reverence, humility and respect.
FORGING MY OWN PATH
The establishment of MOUKO KAI was a defining moment in my martial journey.
During the COVID period, I faced circumstances that tested my independence, convictions and willingness to stand by my values, principles and standards.
When the easier option was to fold under pressure, I chose to remain aligned with my convictions and accept the consequences of that decision.
Those experiences contributed to my determination to establish an organisation that reflected the martial principles I believed in.
Rather than remain dependent upon an existing structure or wait for someone else to determine my direction, I chose to forge my own path.
I did not wait for the right wave to arrive. I created my own.
MOUKO KAI was not established simply to become another karate organisation.
It was established as a martial order, dedicated to developing individuals who understand that being martial is a way of living.
Since its establishment, I have continued to challenge, develop and refine its teachings, structure, standards and direction.
Because founding something is only the beginning.
Creation demonstrates the will to begin. Refinement demonstrates the discipline to continue.
THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF MARTIAL PRINCIPLES
My development has also required me to understand the relationship between strength and gentleness, force and restraint, courage and compassion.
On one occasion, I intervened and physically took down a man who was fleeing police.
That experience called upon the martial capabilities I had developed through decades of training.
In contrast, I have also volunteered my time teaching karate to children on the autism spectrum.
That experience demanded patience, understanding, adaptability, compassion and gentleness.
Two very different circumstances requiring two very different expressions of the same martial discipline.
The same hands capable of applying force to restrain an individual must also possess the gentleness to guide a vulnerable child.
Through my continued study of philosophy, including the Principle of Polarity, I have developed a deeper appreciation of the necessity to govern these opposing expressions of character.
Strength without restraint is incomplete.
Compassion without the courage to act can also leave a person limited.
The responsibility of a mature martial artist is to develop both capacities and exercise the judgement to determine what circumstances require.
CREATION, LEADERSHIP & SERVICE
Beyond MOUKO KAI, I have continued to apply these principles through the establishment and development of RAMMFIT, my podcast series, Mr RAMMFIT, the Order of the Four Pillars and the Library of Masculine Law.
Although different in their individual purposes, these initiatives share a common foundation: discipline, personal responsibility, self-governance, leadership, service and the development of human character.
I do not present these achievements as substitutes for technical martial proficiency.
I present them as evidence that the principles I teach extend beyond the dojo and influence how I conduct my life, develop others and contribute to my community.
TRANSPARENCY, GOVERNANCE & ACCOUNTABILITY
I recognise that some within the broader martial community may question a founder applying for promotion within an organisation of his own creation.
That is a legitimate question, and one I am prepared to address openly.
The MOUKO KAI Board consists of trusted advisors whom I appointed to provide guidance and oversight.
They are not my students, nor are they being represented as independent martial arts technical examiners.
Their advisory responsibilities include consideration of leadership, character, service, organisational contributions and the responsibilities associated with my position.
The Board's formal authority in relation to this application, the applicable promotion criteria and the assessment of technical qualifications must be clearly established and documented before any decision is made.
Any technical assessment will be described accurately, without implying independent examination where none has occurred.
I believe it is important that those within MOUKO KAI, and those observing from outside, understand the distinction.
Founding an organisation does not place me above its standards. It places upon me a greater responsibility to uphold them.
I have therefore chosen to publish my complete application, outlining my martial experience, philosophical development, community service, leadership, achievements and the responsibilities upon which I seek consideration for Godan.
The outcome of the application, together with the basis for the Board's determination, will also be made public.
WHY I AM APPLYING FOR GODAN
I do not regard Godan simply as recognition of years served, physical capability or previous achievements.
I regard it as an acknowledgement of the greater responsibility to preserve martial knowledge, develop students, mentor future instructors, maintain standards and contribute to something intended to endure beyond my lifetime.
As Founder and Chief Instructor, I remain responsible for the continued development and refinement of MOUKO KAI.
I must remain both student and teacher.
I must possess the conviction to lead while retaining the humility to learn.
And I must be willing to challenge and refine what I have created, rather than assume that everything I establish is beyond improvement.
For an organisation to evolve, its founder must also be willing to evolve.
I do not claim to have mastered every aspect of myself.
Indeed, the further I progress, the more conscious I become of the responsibility accompanying knowledge, experience, capability and authority.
The path of self-mastery remains continuous.
MY POSITION
I did not establish MOUKO KAI to escape responsibility.
I established it to assume greater responsibility.
I chose to forge my own path, create my own wave and accept the obligations that accompany building something intended to endure.
I have endeavoured to demonstrate conviction when external pressures challenged my principles, the capacity to act when circumstances required it, compassion when others needed it, and discipline in the continued refinement of the organisation I founded.
I do not seek Godan because I believe my martial journey is complete.
I seek consideration because I believe my journey has prepared me to accept the greater responsibilities associated with the grade.
Whatever the outcome, my commitment to MOUKO KAI, its members, its standards and the teachings of Hanshi Howard Lipman remains unchanged.
With reverence for those who came before me, humility regarding what remains to be learned, and respect for the responsibility of those entrusted with the future, I make this application public.
The martial way must be lived, not merely practiced.
Osu.
